Mr Jonathan Hempenstall

Mr Hempenstall is a consultant neuro and spinal surgeon who specialises in skull base and non-cancerous brain tumours.

Experience

Mr Hempenstall joined the Trust as a consultant neurosurgeon in February 2018. He is the clinical lead for neurosurgery and care group lead for neurosciences.

Mr Hempenstall divides his time between the skull base and spinal services.

He treats a wide range of skull base conditions, including benign tumours in deep areas of the brain and skull such as meningiomas and vestibular schwannomas. These conditions often involve working closely with the ENT (ear, nose and throat) team, maxillofacial surgeons and oncologists. Mr Hempenstall is also a member of the pituitary multidisciplinary team and provides endoscopic surgical management for pituitary tumours.

He also manages a range of spinal conditions, working to to decrease pain and improve function for his patients by surgically decompressing pinched nerves within the spine.

Awards and prizes

Mr Hempenstall was awarded the Norman Dott Medal for the most outstanding performance in the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (neurosurgery) exam in 2016.
