Professor Nick Curzen

Prof Curzen is a cardiologist with a sub-specialty interest in percutaneous coronary and aortic valve intervention (TAVI).

Experience

Prof Curzen is a consultant cardiologist who joined the Trust in 2004. His specialties are:

  • TAVI (trans-catheter aortic valve implantation), a procedure to repair an aortic valve that isn't functioning correctly
  • coronary artery intervention (a procedure to open up a narrowed artery) for angina and heart attack. 

He trained in cardiology at Southampton, Royal Bournemouth, Royal Brompton, London Chest and St Bartholomew's Hospitals. From 1999 to 2003, Prof Curzen worked as a consultant cardiologist at Manchester Royal Infirmary.

  • Member of the British Cardiac Society trainee education working group and cardiology SAC, 2007-09
  • Specialist adviser to NICE interventional procedures programme as representative to the British Cardiac Society

Research

Prof Curzen runs the coronary research group at UHS and the University of Southampton.

He has published over 260 peer reviewed papers and 20 book chapters, and has edited three cardiology textbooks, the latest being the Oxford Textbook of Interventional Cardiology.

He is chief investigator for two active randomised clinical trials in the UK (RIPCORD 2 and FORECAST) and has received over £4m in grant income in the last three years.
