Professor Ying Cheong

Prof Cheong is a gynaecology surgeon with a sub-specialty interest in reproductive medicine and surgery (fertility).

Training and education

Prof Cheong achieved her medical degree in Trinity College, Dublin, before training as a specialist registrar in the Wessex region. She was admitted as a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2003. 

Prof Cheong completed her doctorate degree in medicine and her higher specialisation in reproductive medicine and surgery (fertility) with Professor Ian Cooke and Professor William Ledger in Sheffield, before returning to the University of Southampton as a senior lecturer and consultant in gynaecology in 2007. 

Experience

Prof Cheong has worked for University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust since October 2007. With training and specialisation in fertility treatment and fertility surgery, both laparoscopic (keyhole) and open, she is currently one of the consultants running the Southampton Fertility Unit. 

Her other key areas of clinical interests include endometriosis, recurrent miscarriage, polycystic ovarian disease and adhesions.

Key achievements

  • Establishing and leading Complete Fertility Southampton at the Princess Anne Hospital
  • Establishing University of Southampton Spin out Vivoplex
  • Winner of Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) award in Tech-Start Up 2016

Research

Prof Cheong has obtained several research grants and is involved with extensive research in embryo development and nutrition. She has also been actively involved in systematic reviews and is a member of the Cochrane Menstrual and Subfertility Group. She is also the speciality lead in obstetrics and gynaecology for the National Clinical Research Network.
