Contacting a chaplain

Hospital chaplains are not medical staff, they are here to listen, to talk to, and to offer confidential general support through what can be trying times. You can contact the chaplaincy service by:

• Asking a member of ward staff to contact the chaplains for you.
• Calling the spiritual care department on 023 8120 8517 - please leave a message on the answerphone if there is no immediate reply. Internally use ext 8517
• Emailing the team via spiritualcare@uhs.nhs.uk - please note this email is usually checked at least twice a day every day.
• If you see us walking around and wish to speak, just stop us!
• We also have an office on D level next to the multi faith chapel where visitors are welcome.
• A chaplain is always available on-site seven days a week. Monday-Friday 8am to 6pm (10am-6pm weekends)

Out of hours support

The spiritual care team works until 6pm every night of the week but staffing levels do not currently permit us to deliver an out-of-hours on call service. After this time a telephone message can be left which the chaplains will collect at 8am the following day (10am Saturday and Sunday). Alternatively you can use the Southampton faith directory.

Patients, relatives, and carers needing support from faith representatives - such as priests, imams, or other spiritual advisors - outside of service hours (6pm to 8am) can be referred to the faith directory to contact a suitable representative directly.
This directory provides contact details for local faith organisations and places of worship, enabling direct access to appropriate spiritual support outside of regular chaplaincy hours.

Roman Catholic priests are only on-site three times a week but are able to offer a 24 hour on call service and can be contacted on the details below:

Spiritual care resource boxes containing prayers, readings and symbols from a variety of faith and non-faith traditions are available on the wards. Please ask if you would like to access these. Bibles and other materials can be obtained for patients by contacting the spiritual care team.
