The team work under the umbrella of the Southampton Centre for Biomedical Research, working closely with doctors and scientists within the centre, and the NIHR Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility team.
The nurses have good relations with other departments, clinical teams and wards throughout the hospital, collaborating particularly closely with those caring for patients with lung conditions.
Working at three key stages
- Study design: advising researchers on how the study should be delivered, and on writing patient information sheets to ensure they are understandable.
- Study set up: making sure all equipment and consumables are ready for the study, planning the day-to day running of the study and actively involving participants, ethically and appropriately.
- Study delivery: organising patient visits ensuring comfort and care, running clinical sessions smoothly, conducting all tests required as part of the study and liaising with the researchers throughout.
