Meet the team
Find out more about our team members below. We also regularly host trainees as part of the healthcare scientist training programme.
Ben Johnson, head of group
Ben leads our radiation protection team, which supports x-ray imaging in the radiology department and radiation protection across the hospital. We also provide these services to selected client hospitals and radiation users outside the Trust. Ben has extensive experience across all areas of x-ray imaging, and has worked in a range of medical physics settings in London and the South East. He has a particular interest in mammography physics, which is where his medical physics career started. Ben is the Trust lead medical physics expert (MPE) for CT, interventional radiology, planar radiography and mammography.
As part of his role in training the next generation of medical physicists, Ben acts as a supervisor to trainee STP (Scientist Training Programme) healthcare scientists and as an assessor at the end of training assessments. He currently lectures on radiography BSc, MSc and FRCR part I (physics) courses on the subjects of imaging and radiation protection. Ben’s interests in this area are in training development, particularly in moving traditional face to face lectures into a more accessible interactive online format.
Ben has been actively involved in the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), chairing the diagnostic radiology special interest group and sitting on the science research and innovation committee. He has been involved in a number of IPEM working parties on technical aspects of diagnostic radiology. Ben was a member of British Institute of Radiology Wessex committee for several years.
Research
Ben’s research interests focus on patient radiation doses in a number of areas of diagnostic radiology, primarily in applications of cone beam CT, mammography and fluoroscopy where methods of optimisation and standardisation of patient doses are developing alongside technical advancements in imaging equipment.
