University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust

Children's blood tests

We offer a blood test service for children up to the age of 18 in our butterfly room (16 and 17 year olds may visit the adult blood test service instead if they prefer).

You can come in Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays) between 8.30 and 11am, and 2 and 5pm. You don't need to book, but you must bring your blood test form along with you. If your child needs a fasting blood test, please arrive for 8.15am. Please be aware our service can be busy, but we will see children who arrive within our walk-in times.

If your child is over 2, instead of coming to the hospital you can book a blood test appointment with us at Weston Lane Surgery on Tuesday afternoons, or at St Mary’s Surgery, Southampton on Friday afternoons. Please call 023 8120 4075 to book.

Please encourage your child to drink plenty of fluids before their blood test (for fasting blood tests offer water only). We can offer options to numb your child's skin before their blood test, to reduce any pain or discomfort.

You can find out more about the process of the blood test, and watch a video about preparing your child, here.

We often see children with complex or additional needs, but if you're concerned that your child may need additional support and would like to speak to us in advance, please call us on 023 8120 4075.
