Dr Chris Stock, head of communications and strategy
Chris works with our leadership to develop our research strategy and culture, and directs our work to engage the public, clinicians, industry and policy makers with our research and its worth.
Making things clearer
Our people are driving better health and care by answering the important questions. In doing so, they must navigate a complex web of activities organisations, regulations, people and funding.
Chris works to cut through this complexity to help get things done, and to make the nature, need and benefit of the research clear to all.
His team work with our research units and teams to engage clearly and well, supporting their research's progress into new treatments, care and policy.
Strategy and linking
Working at the heart of our university-hospital partnership, Chris supports our leadership in developing and explaining their strategy for research.
Working with our university and hospital communications teams, he ensures both partners support and benefit from effective communication of research .
Recently returned from a 16 month secondment to Welsh Government to head their national research communications, Chris joined Southampton in 2012 from the Wellcome Trust, where he headed public engagement support and development for Wellcome's research centres and researchers.
During his time with Wellcome he developed a public engagement strategy for the Crick Institute, and was seconded to manage communications and public engagement for the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.
Chris originally trained as a neuroscientist, gaining his doctorate in Nancy Rothwell's laboratory, working on the effects of inflammation on movement recovery after stroke. This built on a MSc in biological research at Oxford and a BSc in biotechnology at Cardiff.
