Young adult cardiac unit (YACU)

Our purpose built unit was designed so that we can provide specialist care for young adults in an environment tailored to their needs, as well as offering the option of flexible visiting to promote patient support.

The unit gives our patients the chance to meet others with lifelong cardiac conditions in a comfortable and friendly setting. Feedback suggests the facilities provide a comfortable, more homely and relaxed environment:

The ward has excellent facilities, staff are understanding, helpful caring and very professional. Nothing is too much trouble, all very reassuring and relaxed when you are in hospital.

The ward is managed by a senior sister, and all nurses working in our unit have specialist training in caring for patients with congenital heart conditions.

The unit was funded by the successful 'High Five' appeal, run by the charity Rotary Heartbeat House in partnership with UHS. Some of our patients were involved in the project and their requests were incorporated in the final design.
