Eye inpatients and eye surgery

Our eye short stay unit treats patients from across Hampshire and the Channel Islands. We also accept patients from neighbouring eye units who need specialist care.

Most of our patients come to the unit for day case surgery. This includes corneal or retinal surgery, ocular plastics (also known as oculoplastics) or treatment for cataracts or glaucoma.

Our inpatient service has four single rooms for people with a variety of conditions, ranging from severe eye infections to corneal ulcers which might require longer term care for up to a week. We also treat people who need intensive eye drops every half an hour.

We provide the pre-admission assessment service and deal with out-of-hours eye emergencies.

When you come in

When you arrive, your medical history will be checked. The surgical and anaesthetist team will go through your surgery with you, and get you to sign any consent forms. An order list will be decided once all patients due for surgery on that day have been seen.

You'll stay in the waiting area until you're called for your surgery. As space is limited, please only bring one relative with you. If there are a lot of operations due or a lot of emergencies that day, we may have to ask your relative to wait elsewhere or ask them to come back. Please do not bring children with you.

Once you come back from your surgery you will be made comfortable, observed and checked and offered a light refreshment.

When you are ready to go home (usually within half an hour) you will be given any post-operative medication you need, such as eye drops.

If you need medication from the pharmacy, you may have to wait longer. Unfortunately this is outside of our control, but we will try to keep you informed about how long your wait may be.
