Training and education
Dr Ardern-Jones undertook medical training at St Bartholomew's Medical College, University of London. He trained in Dermatology at the Oxford Radcliffe NHS Trust and subsequently carried out his DPhil (PhD) studies at Christ Church, University of Oxford. He trained in cutaneous immunology at the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, University of Oxford via a Wellcome Research Training Fellowship.
Dr Ardern-Jones has worked for University Hospital Southampton since June 2007.
He practices general dermatology including skin cancer, paediatrics and inflammatory disease. He has a specific clinical and research interest in eczema and allergy and runs a specialist adult eczema and paediatric allergy and eczema clinic.
Dr Ardern-Jones' key achievements have been to develop a clinical service to provide specialist care of patients with allergic and immunological skin disease, especially eczema. He has coordinated this around a strong research interest which is designed to enhance the prospect of making critical advances relevant to human disease and with potential for translation into new therapeutic targets. He found an exciting novel link between infection and allergic responses in the skin, which suggests an important communication between the structural cells in the skin and the circulating immune cells.
