Our eye unit outpatient department assesses and treats up to 50,000 patients with a wide range of eye conditions every year. Based at Southampton General Hospital, we cover Southampton, Eastleigh, Chandler's Ford and the New Forest, but also see patients from much further afield.

Our team includes consultants, ophthalmic (eye) nurse specialists, nurses and healthcare assistants, and is experienced in treating patients of all ages, including babies.

We're open five days a week:

Monday to Thursday, 7.45am to 6pm
Friday, 7.45am to 3.30pm

Corneal and external eye clinics

We'll see you at the corneal and external eye clinic to monitor your progress if you've had a corneal graft, infection or allergic reaction to the front (or white) of your eye. Find out more about corneal conditions and surgery here.

General clinics

Our general clinics are led by nurses, and are for people with cataracts and other minor problems. If you've had your operation, we'll monitor your progress here.

Glaucoma clinics

Our nurses lead clinics especially for glaucoma. After you've been treated for glaucoma, we'll invite you to regular clinics to make sure your medication is still okay.

Macular clinics

We'll monitor your progress at our macular (small area at centre of retina) clinic if you've had an operation or you have age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This is where the delicate cells of the macular become damaged and stop working, causing you to lose your central vision. Find out more on the NHS website.

If you come to this clinic, you'll need eye drops to let us examine the back of your eye. Do not drive yourself to hospital as the eyedrops dilate your pupils and blur your vision for a few hours. You will not be able to drive home.

Where possible, if you have AMD we will see you in the morning, and give you any treatment in the afternoon.

Ocular motility clinics

We'll invite you to this clinic if you have eye movement and vision problems. Find out more about eye movement disorders here.

Oculoplastics clinics

We'll see you at our oculoplastics clinic if you have a disorder of your eyelid, tear drainage system or orbit. The clinic runs on Wednesday (led by Mr Daniele Lorenzano) and Thursday mornings (led by Mrs Doreen Khan-Lim).

Both clinics can send you on for surgery if needed. This may be a minor operation in the outpatient department, or surgery in the eye unit theatres.

Primary care clinic

We will try to review you and give you your treatment on the same day. Your GP may refer you to this clinic, for anything from inverted lashes to major lesions. If you're having laser surgery, your GP or optician will refer you to us.

Vitreoretinal clinics

Our vitreoretinal (back of the eye) clinics monitor you after you've had an operation.

If you come to this clinic, you will need eyedrops to let us examine the back of your eye. Do not drive yourself to the hospital as the eyedrops dilate your pupils and blur your vision for a few hours. You will not be able to drive home.
