Children's eyes and vision

Children's eye services are based within Southampton General Hospital's eye unit, rather than the main children's outpatient department.

Separate clinic rooms ensure privacy while your child is tested, and there is a dedicated children's play area and easy access to baby changing facilities in the main outpatient department.

We are proud to have a paediatric family support service (PFSS), giving children and their families extra support and information when their child is diagnosed with a serious eye condition.

If you have a query about your child’s eye appointment please contact the orthoptic department on 023 8120 4789. Please do not ring the main children's outpatient department booking office.

When you come in

Please allow one to two hours for your visit. This is to allow enough time for your child's eye examination, for any eye drops that need to be given to take full effect (30 to 40 minutes), and to discuss the results of the eye examination and your concerns with the doctor.

Please check in at the orthoptic department reception desk first, so we can check your details.

Spectacle dispensing for children

Orthoptics have a spectacle dispensing service for children. We're open every day, but Mondays and Thursdays are the best days to come in for collections and adjustments to your glasses.
