Prostate cancer nurse nominated for community hero award for his dedication to healthcare in face of his own diagnosis

Rob Keating, a Macmillan prostate cancer clinical nurse specialist, has been nominated for one of BBC Radio Solent’s Community Heroes Awards for his outstanding commitment to healthcare.

The Community Heroes Awards, to be broadcast on radio on Friday, 31 July, is a celebration of unsung heroes from across Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight in recognition of their hard work to make our communities a better place.

Rob was nominated in the ‘services’ category by his wife for his bravery and resilience following his own diagnosis of cancer after helping so many of his patients through a similar situation.

Speaking to Prostate Cancer UK, Rob explained how he had visited his GP after finding it difficult to pass urine.

He had a PSA test, which measures the level of prostate specific antigen in the blood, to see if there were any signs of prostate cancer cells.

“I was supporting patients with similar results to mine, some with localised and metastatic disease, so I was keen to get things checked out further just to be sure nothing had been missed.”

After two years of surveillance, Rob had a second MRI and biopsies were taken. His clinicians confirmed he had prostate cancer and needed treatment. He had a prostatectomy in June 2019 and has since returned to work.

Delighted to be nominated, he explained: “My wife could see the challenges I had faced and was facing with the nature of my job and what I was doing to balance work and life challenges.

“She sent in the application unknown to me and they shortlisted me to one of three – which was a complete surprise!”

We helped share Rob’s story last year when he was interviewed by charity Prostate Cancer UK about how walking football helped him cope with his diagnosis and how his expertise helped him calm his family’s worries. Read his story on the Prostate Cancer UK website

The Community Heroes Awards will be broadcast on BBC Radio Solent on Friday, 31 July during Pat Sissons’ show (10am and 2pm). The winner of the services category will be announced shortly after 1pm, followed by the big reveal of the prestigious Community Hero Award for 2020.

Tune in on Friday to find out if Rob wins his category.
